Woamy launches its first biofoam product for plastic-free packaging with Paptic and Secto Design

Woamy, Secto Design, and Paptic, are collaborating to transform the lighting industry's packaging standards. The redesigned packaging is recyclable and aligns with the principles of the circular economy.

Secto Design, a company specializing in modern hand-made design lamps, moved its Petite product line’s products from traditional fossil-based packaging into new packaging made of materials that are recyclable and in line with the circular economy. The plastic foams, used to protect the metal parts from scratches during transportation in the Petite floor and table lamps, will be changed to fully bio-based, plastic-free, biodegradable, and recyclable biofoam produced by Woamy. The plastic hoods will be replaced with ones made of renewable and recyclable at-scale Paptic® material.

“I'm very pleased with these developments towards plastic free packaging”, states Joakim Jusélius, Part Owner and Board Member of Secto Design. “To me this is another tangible step in our sustainability efforts, to act in accordance to our values, with more to come in the near future. It is wonderful to work with the bright folks from Woamy and Paptic, to do good together, and a pleasure to be involved at an early stage in this cutting edge innovations. I think we all must do what we can for the planet and really act. I hope our work here can help others find ways to take action too.”

"This is a very exciting moment for Woamy to launch our first packaging foam product to the market. This product is a perfect example on how to protect delicate surfaces and ensure plastic-free and circular packaging with our biodegradable and recyclable biofoam. It has been a joy to work with Secto Design as they are a customer who truly cares about sustainability and is ready to invest time and effort to make those values reflect in actions. And through this project, together with Secto Design and Paptic, we are highlighting how important it is to collaborate, in order to achieve sustainable change." comments Susanna Partanen, CEO & Co-founder of Woamy. Woamy is a Aalto University spin-out and is bringing to the market a novel ecological cellulose-based biofoam to replace the unsustainable plastic foams.

“We were excited to join forces with Secto Design and Woamy to transform the packaging standards of the lighting industry towards a more sustainable direction. When Secto Design, a company with a strong sustainability agenda, chooses your materials for its packaging proves that our materials meet their high functionality and sustainability requirements", says Esa Torniainen, Chief Strategy Officer and Co-founder at Paptic Ltd. He continues: "Our materials’ unique qualities, such as flexibility and softness, perform exceptionally well in this packaging, where a non-scratch surface is also essential." Recyclable at scale Paptic® materials offer a unique combination of sustainability, strength, and distinctive tactile properties. The versatile materials were developed to decrease the use of plastic in flexible packaging. In this case, it is now easy for a consumer to recycle the entire packaging in one recycling stream. The wood-fibre-based Paptic® materials are also available as FSC® certified.

The Petite product line will be delivered completely plastic-free from the beginning of February 2024.
